Feels dramatic, but honestly it nails the core issue: a handful of tech giants now have more practical power over public life than the government seems willing or able to challenge.

I'd say the US government is essentially bought, since even the president himself received millions of dollars from these oligarchs at his inauguration. So, it's more like they don't even care since those companies are the hand that feeds them.

This take is way overblown - most people are just using apps to live their lives, not being controlled by some secret digital empire...

Since the average phone screen time for a person is nowadays several hours (~4.5h) with some cohorts reaching arounds 7h, it's hard to overestimate the impact of apps on our lives.

I see my kids glued to their phone and reading this I say he is correct. I am not int social media not like the youth. I saw my youngest change dramatically when she got her first phone. She spends an hour (at least) on make up when she wakes up. I also feel that IBM was broken up into pieces but Microsoft and Google are bigger now than IBM ever was. The USA is not going to break them up because they are listening to those companies and not to the people.
