A new report by energy think tank Ember found that 43GW of enhanced geothermal capacity in the EU could be developed for below €100/MWh, which is comparable in cost to coal and gas electricity. While this only represents a fraction of Europe’s total geothermal potential, researchers identified that EU-level deployment could deliver around 301 TWh of electricity every year. This is equivalent to almost half (42 per cent) of coal- and gas-fired generation in the EU in 2025.

This idea that geothermal could theoretically replace up to 42% of the EU’s coal and gas-fired electricity is kinda mind-blowing. What are the real bottlenecks, tech limits, boring deep holes, policy and permitting? How does this compare to other parts of the world?
