Great news (obviously not as great as some actual open protocol) - WhatsApp for a long time has been my *most disliked* app. I find the network effects of most social media isn't really there anymore, but I genuinely can't leave/uninstall WhatsApp without just choosing to not take part in various communities, which isn't really a great option.
Honestly, I would actively pay a decent chunk of money just to not use WhatsApp and I'm sure I'm not the only one - hopefully more progress like this happens soon.

Perhaps the younger generation will save us. Many of them use Snap or Signal instead. I wonder if they could be persuaded to move to something else more open
